Leadership & Member Development
Leaders are inspiring and respectable. As members of SPSEA, we commit to enhancing our professional leadership qualities. By doing so, we serve as exceptional role models in the eyes of our fellow and future members.

In order to start the year off right, the UPG SPSEA chapter holds an annual Kick-Off Meeting. At this meeting, officers and chairs are introduced. The ideas of "why become an active member" and "what SPSEA offers" introduced. Our semester calendar is shared. Mostly, students are introduced to each other over a meal, in this case lunch, which our chapter pays for.

In January, when students return to the university, we want to get them excited for the new semester. At this welcome back meeting, SPSEA not only paid for lunch, but we shared important information about what the semester was going to hold. New calendars were given out, sign up sheets were passed around, and a video about the SPSEA conference was shown.

Building membership means building relationships. Nothing builds relationships like going on a road trip. This year, we decided to not only visit Washington, DC, but also go to Gettsyburg on the way back. Highlights of the trip include Mount Vernon, the Capital Building, the Smithsonian Museums, Library of Congress, a ghost tour, and the Monuments. Best of all, the Newseum had a teacher training that included free admission and "bling" for teachers -- and they admitted us as teachers!

Facebook Page
Finding a way to share information is a challenge for a group of people of any size. When a group is as large and diverse as the Pitt-Greensburg SPSEA, we needed an easy and popular platform through which to share upcoming events, employment opportunities, photos from our latest events, and general information.
Not only are our current members on the UPG SPSEA Facebook page (a by-permission-only page), but previous members can share opportunities and check in, too!

Each year, our SPSEA chapter creates new t-shirts. Using an on-line program, members can design shirts and, after the deadline, each club member can vote for a winning design. Four designs were submitted this year with Amanda Stein's being the winning shirt. Having these shirts shows off SPSEA pride and creates a sense of belonging.

We want all of our members to have the chance to attend the SPSEA Statewide conference if they want to attend. However, sometimes the cost can make that difficult. This fundraiser allows members to fund their trip to the conference by selling pepperoni rolls. (The profits from anyone who sells but doesn't attend the conference benefit the chapter as a whole).

Our club hosts a lot of events, so we needed to raise some funds. We opted to try a candy bar fundraiser. While we didn't raise as much as we hoped, we raised some money, were able to give faculty candy for American Education week (see Community Service), and have a "prize" for members who frequently come to meetings.

Differs each month, but often
includes the following:
Every month, our SPSEA chapter holds two meetings. At these meetings, our officers go through the meeting agenda, covering prior events, upcoming events, and news that everyone should hear. For members who cannot come to the meeting, copies of the minutes are posted on our education bulletin boards.

Water Sales

Participating Members:
The Westmoreland Heritage Festival has a car show, booths, and other festival favorites. Pitt-Greensburg offers parking and a shuttle. Our SPSEA chapter sold water to hot, thirsty festival attendees to raise money for the year's events.

Chairperson Meeting

Participating Members:
Being a chairperson is difficult: for most members, it's the first time that they have run that particular activity or area. Therefore, every year is a "first" time. At this chairperson meeting on September 18, 2019, our chapter president, Kendra Moxon, shared information and provided guides (where they exist) for the various chairs. Not everyone could make it, but the great majority of chairpeople were there. Meeting allowed everyone to know that we were supported by our board and that we could get help if we wanted it.

Each year, the university holds an Activities Fair where every club on campus can request a table and can provide information about their club. Our SPSEA chapter had a table filled with information about why education students should join SPSEA, the discounts provided, our fall semester calendar, a raffle for a teacher- supply basket (whose proceeds went to PACE), and information about the October trip to Washington, DC. We also gave away highlighters with a reminder to come to the kick-off meeting the next week.

End Of The Year/Senior Picnic
Participating Members:
At the end of each year, Pitt-Greensburg SPSEA has a picnic (usually indoor due to rain and wind) to celebrate our accomplishments, thank our chairpeople and officers, and present our graduating seniors with an SPSEA gift. In 2018, we had a lot to celebrate: our chapter was recognized for APEX at the state conference, we had many new and exciting programs, and had completed one more year at the university. We were happy to pass out certificates of thanks and recognition to our chairpeople, eat lunch together, and take one more set of photos with our friends.

Pi Lambda Theta Induction
Participating Members:
At Pitt-Greensburg, we are very lucky that all of our education extracurricular fall under the umbrella of SPSEA. For example, Pi Lambda Theta, the national honor society for education, works hand-in-hand with Pitt-Greensburg SPSEA as the members completely overlap. SPSEA helps raise funds for Pi Lambda Theta's induction ceremony and Pi Lambda Theta inductees, who must have a 3.5 GPA overall, provide inspiration for SPSEA members. On April 13, 2018, Pi Lambda Theta inductees and their families attended a luncheon to celebrate their achievement and accomplishments.
